Purchasing A New Router
A few suggestions of what to consider when you are looking for a new router.
Switch Location
Location of the on/off switch is another factor to consider. The switch should be easily accessible whether you are using this router table mounted or hand held. Some routers have the switch located on the handles, which may not always work well when table mounted.
Consider what types of router bits you plan on using
If you plan on using larger router bits, such as the bits used for making raised panel doors, the router should be at least 2 1/2 horsepower. We use a 3 1/4 horsepower router on the program.
Router Speed?
Variable speed is one option you should consider. For instance, if you are using large router bits you may want to turn the speed down, which in turn will reduce the noise level.
Plunge Or Not?
Another option to consider is having a plunge router. A plunge router will allow you to remove the springs if you wish to use your router table mounted, as well as facilitate the completion of pattern work outside of the table.
